What is hormone therapy?

Hormone therapy is a medical treatment that uses hormone replacement medication to restore your body’s hormonal balance.

As women approach menopause, estrogen levels go up and down, causing a number of symptoms including hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness. Hormone therapy treats these symptoms to help you feel better.

When it comes to hormone therapy, Dr. John prefers the use of bioidentical hormones.

What are bioidentical hormones?

Bioidentical hormones are hormonal supplements made from extracts of yams and soy. These more natural hormones are synthesized to have the same molecular structure as the hormones in women’s bodies.

Because bioidentical hormones are the same hormone produced by your body they, they are able to perform the same functions as your own hormones, and therefore they assist in alleviating the symptoms caused by fluctuations.

Most pharmaceutically derived hormones are synthesized from horse urine. These are the hormones that have all of the negative effects that are associated with their use. Dr. John prefers the use of bioidentical hormones due to the concerns many women have about the use of prescription hormones -- namely, the links to heart disease and certain types of cancer.

How can hormone therapy help men?

Dr. John is well aware that men also experience changes in hormone levels as they age, and so he offers testosterone replacement therapy to restore levels.

In men, low testosterone affects energy levels, sex drive, and weight. Low levels are also linked to depression and changes in mood.

Testosterone therapy may help improve your libido, sexual function, mood, and muscle mass.
