What is Botox?

Botox is a cosmetic procedure that reduces lines and wrinkles. It’s comprised of botulinum toxin type A, which is a purified substance produced by bacteria.

You may have some concern about injecting a toxin into your body, but Botox has been used safely as a cosmetic tool to enhance beauty and youth for years, and it has an astounding safety record.

BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® are the two brands of botulinum toxin offered at Mountain West Medical Services.

What does Botox treat?

Botox and Dysport are used to treat a number of conditions, including:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Frown lines
  • Forehead creases

How does Botox work?

Botox and Dysport block the nerve signal to the muscle, paralyzing the muscle and reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles as the muscle relaxes.

Botox injections are both an art and science, requiring an aesthetic eye and skill set to create the desired look. Dr. John knows where to inject the Botox so you get a natural and youthful look.

The procedure itself takes less than 15 minutes, and depending on the product you use, can see results as soon as a few days with optimal results at two weeks.

There’s no downtime after getting your injections and you can go right back to your usual activities. In fact, you can get Botox injections on your lunch break.

Does Botox hurt?

You may feel some pinches during the Botox injection process, but it doesn’t last. The needles Dr. John uses are small and the injections minimal.

Despite what you may have heard, Botox doesn’t make your face go numb. It paralyzes the nerve that stimulates the muscles under your skin, not the nerves that control the senses.

How long does Botox last?

Botox or Dysport injections last three to four months. Once the wrinkles and lines return, you can schedule a follow-up appointment for another set of injections.

Regular injections of Botox not only keep your skin smooth, but may help prevent the formation of new lines and wrinkles by limiting the folding of the skin.
