What is Kybella?

Kybella is a prescription injection that contains synthetic deoxycholic acid, a product similar to a substance found naturally your body that breaks down fat. When injected under your chin, it targets the fat cells.

It was approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration in 2015.

Who benefits from Kybella?

Kybella is only approved for treating fat underneath the chin, referred to as submental fat. Submental fat affects both men and women, and you may be more at risk of developing the extra chin due to your genetics. Weight gain and aging also contribute to the accumulation of fat under the chin.

Before Kybella, your only options for getting rid of fat under your chin was surgery or liposuction. Kybella works best if you have a double chin caused by excess fat, not excess skin.

Dr. John determines if you’re a good candidate for Kybella after a consultation and examination.

How does Kybella work?

Dr. John begins treatment by taking a picture of the area and mapping the injection sites. For your comfort, he numbs the area with a topical anesthetic.

The number of injections you need varies, and may range from 10-30 per treatment session. Each session takes about 20 minutes.

After treatment, Dr. John covers the injection area with a bandage. If you feel any discomfort after the injections, ice or over-the-counter pain relievers are recommended.

For best results, you need three to six treatments at four to six week intervals to improve your profile.

Because it takes some time for your body to flush the excess fat, you’ll most likely begin to notice the effects of the injections around the time of your second or third treatment.

How long do Kybella treatments last?

Because Kybella flushes out the fat cells, treatments are lasting. There’s no need to return after you complete your sessions.

In addition to helping treat the fat under your chin, Kybella has an added benefit of tightening the skin, too, which helps with loose skin on the neck, and improves your overall profile.
